Upcoming Events at Children's Book World

Children's Book World Summer Review Program
June 1, 2008-August 31, 2008

Each summer, we ask for brave and willing volunteers to review the advanced reader copies of books not yet published! Your reviews help us decide which books will be on our shelves in Fall/Winter 2008.

It's easy!

  • Borrow up to 2 books from the crates. (Make sure you get a card at the desk.)
  • Read the book.
  • Fill out our short review form.
  • Return the book (within two weeks) and form at the desk.
  • Repeat as desired!

Books may be kept out for a maximum of two weeks and must be returned at that time in readable condition. We would prefer books did not go to camp or on vacation.

Participants will receive a CBW Gift Certificate at the end of the summer. Ages 7 and up are welcome. Questions? Please call Children's Book World at 610-642-6274 or email us at childrensbookworld@verizon.net.

Join us at the Philadelphia Book Festival!
Saturday and Sunday May 17th and 18th

We are so pleased to announce our affiliation with this year's Philadelphia Book Festival. The Festival, a free event held Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, at the Parkway Central Library, 19th and Vine streets offers two days of award-winning writers and poets in a lively atmosphere that combines stimulating book talks and celebrity signings with an eclectic blend of live music, children's entertainment, a new gaming gallery for all ages to enjoy, and a street fair with more than 80 literary exhibitors!

Children's Book World is proud to be a children's book vendor at this exciting event. The following authors and illustrators will be speaking and signing this year:

Saturday, May 17th
KATE AND JIM MCMULLAN: 1:00-1:30, Story Hour Room - Their new book, I'm Bad! is about a tantrum-throwing T. Rex with one thing on his ravenous reptile mind-dinner!

ELBRITE BROWN: 2:00-2:30, Story Hour Room - Local author/illustrator Brown's newest book is Playing To Win: the Story of Althea Gibson.

BRIAN BIGGS: 3:00-3:30, Target Children's Stage - Selected to create the 2008 Philadelphia Book Festival's theme art, Brian Biggs is now settled in Philadelphia, where he writes and illustrates books (Roscoe Riley Rules, Shredderman).

ADAM REX: 3:00-3:30, Story Hour Room - Laughs, jokes, and surprises abound in Pssst!, the story of a feisty, all-too-helpful little girl and her role in aiding and abetting zoo animal shenanigans.

ROSCOE ORMAN: 4:15-5:00, Target Children's Stage - Orman is best known for his 33 years as "Gordon Robinson" on the acclaimed children's TV program Sesame Street. Ricky and Mobo tells the story of six-year-old Ricky, who is determined to win the big neighborhood race with his treasured mechanical horse, Mobo.

Sunday, May 18th
JUDY SCHACHNER: 11:30-12:00, Target Children's Stage - In Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones, the fourth book in the bestselling series, loveable Skippyjon Jones enters into the land of dinosaurs--via his closet--in search of the fabled Skipposaurus.

ALAN KATZ: 12:30-1:00, Story Hour Room - Oops! is a poetry collection to cherish, featuring a world of hallway hijinks, show-and-smell, clean-freak parents, dentist dilemmas, bothersome brothers, and sinister sisters.

GENE BARRETTA: 1:00-1:30, Story Hour Room - Did you know that Ben Franklin invented bifocals, lightning rods, and a rocking chair that churns butter? Barretta (Dear Deer) profiles the many inventions of this jolly innovator and Founding Father in Now and Ben: The Modern Inventions of Benjamin Franklin.

ANDREA J. BUCHANAN and MIRIAM PESKOWITZ: 3:00-3:30, Target Children's Stage - Coauthors of The Daring Book For Girls and the new Pocket Daring Book For Girls.

WENDELIN VAN DRAANEN: 3:00-3:30, Story Hour Room - In Confessions of a Serial Kisser, Evangeline wants a spectacular, heart-stopping, life-changing kiss. But the path to perfection is paved with many bad kisses, and even worse, the boy she's just kissed turns out to be her best friend's new crush. van Draanen (Sammy Keyes Mysteries) has written a funny and touching story of one girl's quest to find a love that will conquer all, one bad kiss at a time.

JERRY SPINELLI: 3:30-4:00, Target Children's Stage - What is stargazer, skateboarder, chess champ, pepperoni pizza eater, older brother, sister hater, best friend, first kisser, science geek, control freak Will Tuppence so afraid of in this great big universe? Newbery Award-winning author Jerry Spinelli (Maniac Magee) knows, and he tells readers all about it in his latest book, Smiles to Go.

LEE HARPER:4:00-4:30, Story Hour Room - Woolbur is not like other sheep. He dyes his wool blue and hangs out with wild dogs. "Don't worry!" says Grandpaa when Maa and Paa fret that Woolbur is different. But when they tell their son to follow the flock, the opposite happens-the flock follows him!
